Hörst’s summary of López-Rivera’s 8-week comparison reports that the max-weight hang group improved by about 15.2% at 4 weeks and about 28% at 8 weeks, compared with about 4.6% and 13.9% for a submaximal repeater group.[2] Treat those exact percentages carefully, because they are being encountered here through Hörst’s symposium summary rather than as the primary paper. The same Hörst article also discusses Rock Prodigy Training Center repeater data showing roughly 21.5% gains in a first 4-week phase and roughly 32% across phases among 118 app users, but that is manufacturer-linked app data, not a peer-reviewed randomized trial.[2]
The practical read is boring in a good way: if your main goal is to increase maximum finger force, start with max hangs. If your gym sessions already expose you to plenty of limit bouldering but you fade on longer problems or repeated attempts, repeaters can make more sense. Do not run both hard at the same time just because both sound useful.
A twice-weekly home plan that is specific enough to run

Use the warm-up to move from general heat to specific loading:
- Raise body temperature: easy cardio, mobility, or light movement until you feel warm rather than merely awake.
- Prepare shoulders and elbows: scapular pull-up holds, light rows, or band work if those are already familiar to you.
- Ease into the fingers: use large holds, feet-on assistance, and progressively harder partial hangs before any work set.
- Do one or two rehearsal hangs at lower intensity before the first real set.
The warm-up is also where you decide whether today is a training day. If the fingers feel sharp, nervy, swollen, or strangely weak, stop. You do not need a dramatic injury signal to make backing off the correct choice.
Progression rules for max hangs
For max hangs, keep the edge, grip, assistance, and added load consistent enough that the session can be compared with last week. If every session changes hold depth, rest, body position, and load, your notebook will look busy while telling you very little.
- Start with 3 work hangs. Each is aimed at roughly 10 seconds.
- Rest long enough between work hangs that the next effort is still high quality.
- If you fail around 8 seconds, make the next session easier by adding assistance, using a larger edge, or reducing load.
- If you can hold 16 seconds or more, make the next session slightly harder.

Equipment is a constraint, not the training plan
Renters have real constraints. A mounted board is clean if you own the wall or have permission. A door-frame pull-up bar can support some setups, but door-frame finger hangs are not a beginner solution and depend heavily on the frame. Portable blocks or finger planks are often the least dramatic option because they let you train with feet-on assistance or external loading without asking a questionable door trim to become structural equipment.
