Preparing for the Leadville 100 on a home treadmill is realistic for most of the race's demands — climbing power, aerobic base, runnable-mile economy, and pacing discipline — provided the plan addresses what a treadmill can't replicate: altitude, downhill eccentric load, and technical terrain. Yes, you can build a serious Leadville 100 training plan on a treadmill at home. The useful version of that answer comes with a condition: the treadmill can train much of the job, but it cannot pretend to be Colorado altitude, long descents, or rocky trail under tired legs.
For 2026, that job has a revised shape. The Leadville Race Series lists the Willow Fire detour route at 99.7 miles with 13,357 feet of gain, two Hope Pass crossings, a 30-hour official cutoff, and the sub-25-hour “big buckle” standard.[1] The race is still often described by its traditional elevation-gain figures — commonly in the 15,492-to-15,744-foot range — which is worth noting because the official 2026 page itself contains some route-stat inconsistency.[1][2] For training, the question is less romantic and more practical: you need to be able to run for a long time, climb for a long time, hike without losing your head, and keep doing all of that when the air and terrain stop helping.

That is good news for the runner who has the will to train but not the geography. A parent running after bedtime, a flatland runner staring at Hope Pass on a course map, or a winter-bound athlete in a basement does not need to treat treadmill miles as fake miles. They do need to know exactly what those miles are buying.
Turn the course into training demands first
Leadville has a finish-rate problem before it has a treadmill problem. In most years, fewer than half of starters finish inside 30 hours; in 2023, 363 of 819 starters finished, or 44%.[2][3] That number is not a verdict on anyone’s treadmill. It is a reminder that the plan has to train the race’s demands, not just collect impressive indoor mileage.
The demands sort into a few buckets:
- Runnable aerobic volume: Leadville is not one endless hike. TrainingPeaks coach Andrew Simmons describes the course as roughly 80% runnable, with Hope Pass accounting for about 50% of the total climbing but only about 20% of the mileage.[4]
- Sustained climbing and power hiking: Hope Pass is the obvious test, but the smaller climbs before and after it matter because they arrive inside a very long day.
- Run/hike decision-making: the treadmill is useful here because it makes cheating obvious. If the grade is set and the belt is moving, you either manage the effort or you get pushed backward.
- Pacing discipline: a home treadmill is brutally good at teaching steady output. That is not glamorous. It is also not optional.
- Altitude tolerance, downhill durability, and technical-footing competence: these are the debts an indoor plan has to acknowledge separately.
That split matters because a treadmill is not equally good at all of those jobs. It is excellent for controlled aerobic work and incline climbing. It is incomplete for the things that make mountain racing feel rude: thin air, trashed quads, irregular footing, weather, and the odd little mistakes people make when the trail is no longer smooth.
What a home treadmill can genuinely build
The strongest case for treadmill training is not that it feels like Leadville. It does not. The case is that many Leadville-relevant outputs can be trained very cleanly at home: low-intensity volume, uphill muscular endurance, repeatable threshold climbing, and the habit of holding back when the belt makes it easy to measure the cost of impatience.
Sustained uphill hiking
A typical home treadmill that reaches 15% incline gives you enough grade to train the kind of slow, muscular climbing that many flatland runners otherwise never touch. It does not need to be pretty. Ten to 15 minutes of focused incline hiking can be plenty early on; longer blocks become valuable as the athlete adapts. iRunFar’s Ian Torrence describes sustained incline hiking at 12% to 15% grade around 3 mph, beginning with 10-to-15-minute bouts and progressing toward 60 minutes, with optional load or controlled surges once the base is established.[5]
That session trains a specific Leadville skill: moving uphill without trying to turn every climb into a run. Plenty of runners can suffer uphill for 10 minutes. Fewer can hike efficiently for an hour, eat, keep posture, avoid spiking effort, and then run again.
Runnable mileage without terrain excuses
The treadmill’s boringness is part of its value. Leadville includes long runnable stretches, and the indoor runner can practice those miles without stoplights, icy shoulders, or route logistics. A modest incline — commonly 1% for flat-effort treadmill runs — is often used to offset the lack of wind resistance. It is not a magic conversion, but it is a sensible default for steady aerobic running when the goal is outdoor transfer rather than chasing a flattering screen pace.
The point is not to run every treadmill mile hard. A credible Leadville build needs large amounts of controlled work. If the belt teaches anything useful, it teaches how small pace changes become expensive over time.
Uphill threshold work
Incline intervals are where the treadmill becomes more than a weather workaround. David Roche has written about treadhill workouts such as “The Burn Ladder” and “The Infinity Buzzsaw,” using changing grades to create hard uphill work without the pounding of flat speed sessions.[8] His own Leadville course-record buildup included regular uphill-treadmill threshold work; he described a 2025 build of 65 to 75 miles per week, often finishing runs with 10 to 15 minutes on the uphill treadmill before running 15:12:30 at Leadville.[7]
That does not make Roche’s training portable in the copy-and-paste sense. It does show that treadmill climbing belongs in serious ultra training when the session has a purpose.
Run/hike transitions
A smooth treadmill is not a mountain trail, but it is a fine place to practice switching gears before the race makes the decision for you. Heather Hart’s Hill Climbing Transitions workout alternates 0.5-mile runs at 1% incline with 0.25-mile power hikes at 15%.[9] That is the kind of indoor session that looks tame on paper and becomes useful when the runner stops treating hiking as failure.
For Leadville, the transition is often more important than the label. Can you settle into a hike before you redline? Can you return to running afterward without sulking into a shuffle? The treadmill will not answer every trail question, but it can make that rhythm repeatable.
Proof that treadmill work can transfer — within limits
The best treadmill stories are useful because they are specific. Paul DeWitt, a two-time Leadville winner, rebuilt heavily on an incline treadmill after injury. iRunFar reports that his first month was nearly all treadmill work: about 90 minutes per day at 4 mph on 8% to 12% grade, followed later by tempo work around 8%. He returned to set a 3:11:55 Pemberton Trail 50k course record that stood for 13 years.[5]

Jacob Puzey’s treadmill record is another useful guardrail against treating indoor running as unserious. In December 2016, he ran a 4:57:45 50-mile treadmill world record after training mostly in 60-to-90-minute sessions, with an 18-mile longest run.[6] Don Freeman’s Western States build is also cited by TrueForm as being roughly 90% treadmill-based, with Dr. Mark Cucuzzella endorsing the approach.[6]
Those examples do not erase the differences between treadmill fitness and mountain racing. They show that controlled indoor work can create real endurance and climbing strength when it is programmed deliberately. Transfer is the standard. Inspiration is not enough.
The three gaps a treadmill plan has to pay for
If an at-home Leadville plan fails, it probably will not be because the treadmill could not produce sweat. It will be because the plan ignored what the machine does poorly.
Altitude is not a motivational issue
Leadville starts above 10,000 feet and crosses Hope Pass around 12,500 to 12,600 feet.[1] COROS’s 2023 analysis reported that VO2max and intensity thresholds drop by about 20% at 10,000-plus feet.[3] That is not the kind of deficit a runner fixes by wanting it more on race morning.
The same COROS analysis also found that 51% of finishers in its sample did no altitude training.[3] That is important, but it has a boundary: the sample included 57 self-selected athletes, not the whole 819-starter field.[3] The narrower lesson is still useful. Altitude preparation helps some runners, but lack of altitude access does not automatically disqualify a well-trained flatland athlete. It does mean race effort has to be adjusted downward, especially early.
At home, the workaround is not pretending the treadmill creates altitude. It is building more aerobic margin, practicing restrained uphill output, arriving as early as life allows if you can, and rehearsing effort by breathing and perceived exertion rather than by sea-level pace.
Downhill damage needs separate training
Most home treadmills incline but do not decline. That leaves out a central mountain-race problem: eccentric quad loading from long descents. Treat it as a separate adaptation, not a setting you can fake.
This is where the home runner has to be honest. Uphill treadmill fitness can get you to a summit with legs that feel heroic. The descent can still collect payment. Strength work, step-downs, squats, lunges, controlled downhill outdoor running when available, and stairs are not decorations around the treadmill plan. They are part of the plan.
Technical terrain changes the cost of each mile

A treadmill belt is predictable. Leadville is not. Rocks, ruts, camber, dust, mud, night footing, and aid-station congestion all change rhythm. A treadmill-trained runner may have the engine to keep moving but still spend extra energy stabilizing, braking, and choosing lines.
The workaround does not have to be exotic. If trails are unavailable, use the roughest legal outdoor footing you can find: gravel roads, uneven grass, stairs, short hiking loops, winter sidewalks when safe, or local hills repeated without apology. If you can only get occasional trail days, do not waste them proving fitness. Use them to practice descending, hiking with poles if you plan to race with them, eating while moving, and running after long climbs.
A sample Leadville treadmill-at-home week
This is an example structure, not a universal Leadville 100 plan. It assumes the runner is already durable enough to train for an ultramarathon and is using the treadmill as the backbone because trails, altitude, weather, or family logistics limit access. Volume, intensity, and recovery should be scaled to the athlete, preferably with a coach if the race is on the calendar.

A runner with less background might use fewer quality sessions and more rest. A stronger runner might extend the long run, add easy mileage, or progress the incline hikes. The shape matters more than the exact distances: one uphill-quality day, one sustained hiking day, one transition day, one long aerobic day, and one explicit day for the things the treadmill does not solve.
How to progress it without turning every run into a test
Progression can come from longer hiking blocks, slightly more total aerobic time, one extra repeat in the transition workout, or a steadier effort at the same grade. It does not need to come from making every treadmill session steeper and faster. That is how a plan built for consistency becomes a machine for sore calves.

Home treadmill setup: keep it boring and safe
Most of the setup advice is less exciting than people want. Use the incline you have. Many home treadmills top out around 15%, which is enough for meaningful uphill hiking and climbing intervals. Many do not decline, which is why downhill work has to be handled elsewhere. For flat-effort running, 1% incline is a common treadmill adjustment. For steep hiking, hold posture rather than hanging off the console and turning the workout into an upper-body support drill.
Do not raise the rear of a treadmill on blocks to simulate downhill. iRunFar warns against that shortcut, and it does not belong in a Leadville plan.[5] Use safer substitutions: outdoor downhill when available, stairs, strength work, or a machine designed for decline.
So, is a treadmill enough for Leadville?
A home treadmill can be the backbone of a Leadville 100 build for many constrained runners. It can build aerobic volume, sustained climbing power, uphill threshold strength, hiking rhythm, and pacing discipline with a level of control that outdoor routes often cannot match.
It is not enough if the plan treats treadmill competence as race readiness. Altitude, downhill damage, and technical terrain need explicit workarounds. Pay those debts on purpose, and the basement treadmill becomes a useful tool for a mountain race. Ignore them, and it becomes a very precise way to arrive underprepared.
