Prep for Ski Season With a No-Jump Home Workout
Jump-heavy ski-prep plans are a nonstarter when your floor is also your neighbor's ceiling. This routine builds ski legs with zero jumping and zero equipment — wall sits, split squats, step-ups, and single-leg control on a yoga-mat footprint — so you can prep for the season without a single thud.

The problem with a lot of ski season home workout prep is not that it is too hard. It is that it is written as if “home” means a garage slab, not a second-floor living room. A plan can be no-equipment and still be unusable if the main event is jump squats, tuck jumps, burpees, frog hops, jumping lunges, or side-to-side ski jumps.
That is not a made-up complaint. Wagner Skis’ 6-week no-equipment ski prep includes jump squats, tuck jumps, burpees, and frog hops; SKI Magazine’s pre-season circuit includes jumping lunges and jumping squats; and GoSnowmass’s 3-week get-in-shape circuit includes jump lunges and ski jumps.[1][2][3] In the right setting, those moves may be useful. In an apartment, they are also the exact category of movement that sends force through the floor before your quads have even had a chance to fail.
The good news is that the ski-specific part is not the thud. Skiing asks for legs that can hold tension, lower under control, keep the hips and knees organized, and stay stable when one ski is loaded more than the other. None of that requires leaving the floor.
The quiet replacement is not easier; it is more specific to the constraint
The cleanest apartment-friendly bridge to skiing is the wall sit. It is quiet, it fits on a yoga-mat footprint, and it creates the same kind of sustained quad misery that makes the first long run of the season feel personal. EōS Fitness lists wall sits for 30 to 60 seconds as a ski-prep exercise, and Wagner’s plan also uses wall sits in its progression.[5][1]

Cleveland Clinic’s ski workout list is useful here because most of it can be made quiet without changing the point of the work. Sports medicine specialist Dr. Molly McDermott recommends squats, wall sits, side-lying hip abductors, calf raises, skater hops, bridges, planks, and oblique twists, generally for 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps.[4] The one obvious apartment problem in that list is the hop. Keep the hip and balance goal; remove the landing.
REI’s skier training plan is also worth borrowing from because it pays attention to hip control, knee tracking, and balance rather than just leg burn. Its PT-developed plan uses hip rolls, hip clocks, and bridges with an adductor squeeze to help keep the knees from diving inward.[6] That is the kind of work that feels boring until you are tired, turning, and asking one leg to stay honest.
There is also a cautious injury-prevention reason to keep balance, trunk control, and neuromuscular work in the plan. In a 2020 study of competitive adolescent alpine ski high-school students in Sweden, a core-stability, neuromuscular, and balance program was associated with ACL injury rates of 3.9% in the intervention group versus 8.1% in the control group.[7] That does not prove the same effect for a recreational adult getting ready for a vacation. It does support the idea that balance and control work belong in ski preparation, not just quad punishment.
Swap the impact, keep the ski benefit
A renter does not need a moral argument against plyometrics. The floor decides. The useful question is what each noisy exercise was trying to train, then how to get that quality without a floor slap.

The leg blaster is a good example of the thing to translate rather than copy. Mountain Tactical Institute’s leg blaster model is known for hard bodyweight leg conditioning, including jumping lunges and squat jumps in its progression.[8] For an apartment skier, the lesson is not “do it anyway.” The lesson is that accumulated lower-body fatigue matters, and you can accumulate it with split squats, tempo squats, step-ups, and wall sits instead.
The no-jump ski season home workout prep session
Do this on a mat or rug, barefoot or in training shoes that do not squeak. You need a wall and, if available, a stable bottom stair or low step. If you do not have a safe step, replace every step-up with another split squat variation. No chair-balancing stunts; if it wobbles, it is not part of the workout.

Cleveland Clinic’s 3-set, 10-to-15-rep structure works well as the default for the strength pieces, while the wall-sit range gives the session its ski-specific sting.[4][5] The exact exercise order matters less than the rule that every rep lands silently because nothing lands at all.
Wall sits: the apartment skier’s main lift
Set your back against the wall, walk the feet out, and slide down until the position feels like a ski stance you can actually hold. Your knees do not need to be forced into a perfect right angle. The better target is a position where your heels stay down, your knees track in line with your toes, and your quads start negotiating with you before the timer ends.
If 30 seconds makes your form collapse, come up earlier. If 60 seconds is easy, do not immediately chase a deeper, uglier position. Add another hold, slow your breathing, or lightly shift pressure from both legs to one side and back without letting the knees cave.
Split squats instead of jumping lunges

Jumping lunges are usually sold as ski conditioning because they load one leg at a time and punish the quads. A controlled split squat keeps both of those benefits and removes the impact. Step one foot forward, keep the back foot planted, lower slowly, pause just above the floor, then stand without bouncing.
The quiet cue is simple: the back knee should hover, not tap. The front foot should stay glued to the floor. If your knee dives inward as you get tired, shorten the range and make the rep cleaner. Ski prep that teaches your knee to collapse under fatigue is not a bargain.
Tempo squats and step-ups instead of squat jumps
A squat jump trains power, but the part many recreational skiers need most before a trip is the ability to lower, hold, and stand back up repeatedly without losing position. A tempo squat does that quietly. Take the descent slowly, pause near the bottom, then stand without snapping into the floor.
Step-ups are the other useful swap if your apartment gives you a safe stair. Place the whole foot on the step, drive through that foot, and stand tall. Then come down like you are trying not to wake anyone, because you are. The lowering phase is the point; dropping off the step turns a good quiet exercise into a bad neighbor experiment.
Lateral balance instead of skater hops

Skater hops make sense on paper: skiing is not only forward and backward, and the outside leg has to manage force while the body moves across it. But the landing is the problem. Replace the hop with a lateral reach. Stand on one leg, reach the other foot out to the side, tap lightly, and return without letting the stance knee cave inward.
Hip clocks do the same job with more control. Imagine your free foot reaching toward different points on a clock face while the standing leg stays steady. REI uses hip clocks and hip rolls in its ski-training plan, and Carv also frames at-home ski work around balance and control, though not as quantitative proof of training outcomes.[6][10]
Glutes, calves, and trunk: the quiet support work
Side-lying hip abductions are not glamorous, which is convenient because neither is explaining to a downstairs neighbor why you were doing frog hops at 7 a.m. Lie on your side, stack the hips, raise the top leg without rolling backward, and lower with control. Pair them with glute bridges: feet planted, ribs down, hips up, no low-back arching.
Calf raises stay in the plan because ski boots do not remove the need for lower-leg endurance. Use a wall for light balance, rise smoothly, pause, and lower slowly. For trunk work, rotate between planks, side planks, bird dogs, and oblique twists. The goal is not to turn this into an ab finisher; it is to keep your torso from becoming the weak link once your legs are tired.
A simple 6-to-8-week progression
Ski-prep timelines do not line up neatly across published plans. GoSnowmass presents a 3-week circuit, Wagner uses a 6-week plan, and Ski Utah suggests starting 8 to 12 weeks before the season.[3][1][9] For an apartment-based routine, 6 to 8 weeks is a practical middle lane: long enough to progress, short enough for the person who already has a trip on the calendar.

Run the strength session 2 or 3 times per week, leaving space between harder leg days. On the other days, use quiet cardio that does not turn into stomping. How a full no-jump session can look
Here is the complete session in one pass. Keep it quiet enough that the only obvious sign of effort is your breathing.
- Warm up with hip rolls, ankle rocks, easy squats, and slow marching.
- Do a wall sit for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Do tempo squats for 10 to 15 reps.
- Do controlled split squats for 10 to 15 reps per side.
- Do step-ups for 10 to 15 reps per side, or repeat split squats if you do not have a safe step.
- Do side-lying hip abductions for 10 to 15 reps per side.
- Do glute bridges for 10 to 15 reps.
- Do single-leg balance, hip clocks, or lateral reaches on each side.
- Finish with a plank, side plank, bird dog, or oblique twist.
Repeat the circuit if your form is still clean. Stop the leg work when your knees stop tracking, your foot starts slapping, or your lowering phase turns into a drop. That is not softness; that is the apartment version of sport-specific discipline.
What this plan does not claim
This is not an argument that quiet training is magically better than explosive training. If you have a garage, a gym floor, or outdoor space, plyometrics may have a place in your broader conditioning. This article is for the skier who does not have that floor and does not need to be told to “just land softly” under a downstairs neighbor’s bedroom.
