You Bought the Dumbbells. Now Which App Won’t Waste Your Time?
You own adjustable dumbbells, a bench, a few resistance bands. Your space is a corner of the living room. So you download a strength training app, tell it you have dumbbells, and expect a program built around what you own. Instead it programs a barbell back squat, then a barbell bench press, then a cable row. That is not a rare bug. It is the default behavior of many popular strength training apps. They are designed for commercial gyms or fully equipped garages. If your home setup is minimal, the app either skips exercises, offers substitutions that make no sense, or leaves you hunting for workarounds. The result: you spend more time tweaking the program than following it.
I have tested more than a dozen strength training apps specifically on how they handle limited equipment. The question I wanted answered: which apps actually adapt when you tell them you only have bands and dumbbells? Which ones just pretend to?
The Default Assumption: You Own a Rack
The reason is straightforward: most app program libraries are built around proven compound lifts — squats, deadlifts, bench presses. These require a barbell and a rack or bench. When you select “home gym” or “limited equipment,” the app may filter out those exercises, but it often replaces them with machine movements or exercises that still need gear you do not own.
Take JuggernautAI. It is built for powerlifting and powerbuilding, and its programming assumes you have a barbell, squat rack, and plates. Garage Gym Reviews gives it a 4/5 for equipment demands. I think that is generous. In practice, it can work if you own a rack, but if you only have dumbbells and bands, you will hit exercises it cannot substitute effectively.
Boostcamp scores a perfect 5/5 for equipment demands and does let you filter by Full Gym, Garage Gym, Dumbbell Only, or At Home. The filter helps, but the program roster is weighted heavily toward full gym setups. The algorithm pushes the most popular programs, which assume a rack. You still have to hunt for programs tagged “Dumbbell Only.”
My Test: Dumbbells, Bench, Bands
To get past the marketing, I used the same scenario for each app: I loaded in just adjustable dumbbells (5–50 lbs), a workout bench, and a set of resistance bands. I noted how granular the equipment input was, whether the app substituted exercises intelligently when a movement required gear I did not have, and how well the resulting program worked in a small space.

If your setup is dumbbells and bands, Fitbod and Shred are your best bet. Everything else assumes you have more gear than you do. That is the real takeaway: equipment-aware programming is not a nice-to-have. It is the only thing that keeps an app from wasting your time.
