Which Indoor Workout Is Safe in 100°F Houston Heat?
When Houston hits 100°F outside, the safe indoor workout depends on the temperature inside your apartment — not the outdoor thermometer. Below the CDC's 90°F indoor-fan threshold most routines stay viable; above it, the practical move is lower intensity, mobility or lighter work, and an air-conditioned venue.

When Houston is sitting at 100°F outside, the first workout decision is not whether you are “tough enough” to train indoors. It is whether the room you are standing in is cool enough to make training sensible. Check the indoor temperature first. If the room is below 90°F, a fan-assisted indoor workout can still be a reasonable substitute for the run, ride, or outdoor circuit you canceled. If the room is at the 90°F line or hotter, do not treat the fan as your safety plan: the CDC says electric fans may provide comfort, but when indoor temperature is above 90°F, using a fan can increase body temperature rather than protect you from heat illness.[1]
That one threshold does more useful work than a dozen generic lists of indoor workouts for 100-degree Houston heat. The outdoor number explains why you came inside. The indoor number decides what belongs on the mat.

The quick decision: match the workout to the room, not the forecast

The CDC also advises people who cannot keep their homes cool to take cool showers or baths, use wet cloths, and spend time in air-conditioned places such as public buildings or cooling centers.[1][2] That guidance is not a workout program. For exercise, it sets the boundary: if your apartment has crossed into the hot-room band, the responsible adjustment is to reduce heat production, shorten the session, or move the workout to an air-conditioned place.
Why Houston makes this more than a one-off problem
This is not a rare edge case here. Houston recorded 39 days at or above 100°F in 2023 and 16 such days in 2022, according to Extreme Weather Watch’s yearly count for the city.[3] Once triple-digit afternoons become a recurring part of the week, “just move it inside” stops being a complete answer. Inside can mean a cooled gym. It can also mean a west-facing apartment that has been absorbing sun since lunch.
Houston’s emergency management office adds two local details that matter for exercise decisions: fans create airflow but do not lower body temperature, and Houston ranks fourth nationally in urban heat island intensity.[4] In plain terms, the city holds heat well, and a box fan moving warm apartment air around is not the same thing as a cooler training environment.
Humidity adds the part every Houston runner already feels. Third Coast Training, a Houston-area coaching site, summarizes the problem this way: when relative humidity rises above roughly 70%, sweat evaporation becomes less effective, and outdoor pace can slow by nearly a minute per mile compared with low-humidity conditions.[5] Treat that as coaching-site synthesis, not public-health instruction, but the practical point holds: an indoor replacement is often the smart move. It just has to be matched to the indoor heat load.
Below 90°F indoors: keep the workout, remove the unnecessary heat
If your room is below 90°F and you have airflow, most familiar indoor routines can stay on the table. That does not mean copying the outdoor plan exactly. It means preserving the purpose of the session while cutting the parts that generate heat for no good reason.
- If the canceled workout was an easy run: use a treadmill walk-run, indoor bike, marching intervals, step-ups at a controlled pace, or a low-impact cardio video.
- If it was speed work or hill repeats: keep the neuromuscular feel with short controlled efforts, but increase rest and stop well before the room starts feeling swampy.
- If it was a strength day: dumbbells, bands, bodyweight strength, and core work are usually easier to control than jump-heavy conditioning.
- If it was a long outdoor ride: an indoor bike session can work, but the fan, fluids, and session length matter more than the fantasy of reproducing every outdoor mile.
This is where apartment-friendly programming helps. A low-noise dance session can be useful when it avoids constant jumping; a bootcamp-style session can work when the “bootcamp” part does not mean turning a warm living room into a heat chamber. A useful below-90°F adjustment is to keep the main pattern and reduce the heat cost. Swap squat jumps for squats. Swap burpees for walk-outs. Use time caps instead of “as many rounds as possible.” Put the fan across the body rather than aimed at a wall. Keep water nearby, and if the session runs long, the NPR Shots heat-workout guidance cites a general fluid range of about 0.5 to 1 liter per hour, while noting needs vary by person and conditions.[6]

Upper-80s and stuffy: shorten the session before it turns into a heat test
The awkward band is the one that causes the most bad decisions: the thermostat says the room is under 90°F, but the apartment feels thick, the fan is only barely helping, and you are already warm before the warm-up. This is not the day for a maximal HIIT circuit just because the workout is technically indoors.
Use a narrower session. Twenty to thirty minutes of controlled work may be more useful than dragging through a forty-five-minute circuit that leaves you overheated. Choose strength sets with real rest, low-impact cardio intervals, mobility, or skill work. Keep the movements boring enough that you can notice what your body is doing. That is not a moral downgrade; it is how you keep training from becoming an avoidable heat exposure.
- Good fit: two or three strength movements, easy core work, and a short mobility block.
- Still workable: low-impact dance, easy cycling, incline walking, or shadowboxing with long rests.
- Poor fit: repeated burpees, jump lunges, long AMRAP blocks, hard treadmill intervals, or anything that depends on ignoring rising heat.
NPR’s heat-workout reporting also points out why moving outdoors at the wrong hour is not much of a solution: midday sun can add the equivalent of more than 20°F to perceived heat, and swimming or yoga-like work is generally more heat-friendly than running or cycling in hot conditions.[6] If you are choosing between a stuffy upper-80s apartment and a shaded pool, an air-conditioned gym, or a cooler early-morning slot, the “indoor workout” may reasonably happen somewhere other than your living room.
At 90°F indoors or hotter: stop using the fan as permission
Once the room is at the 90°F threshold or hotter, the workout choice changes. This is the line where a fan is no longer the thing that makes a hard living-room session reasonable. The CDC warning is specifically about indoor heat and fans: above 90°F, a fan can increase body temperature.[1] So the plan becomes lower intensity, less metabolic heat, and preferably a cooler location.
The home options in this band are deliberately modest: gentle mobility, slow stretching, breath-paced yoga-like work, light band activation, balance work, or a short technique session that does not raise your core temperature much. If you wanted a hard workout, go where the room supports it. Houston OEM notes that cooling centers may open during heat advisories, and it advises gradual exposure and starting slow in heat.[4] A mall walk, library stair-free walking loop if permitted, community center, gym, or pool is not a failed workout plan. It is the location that makes the workout possible.

Heat acclimation is real, but it is not a same-day excuse
People do adapt to heat exposure over time, but that process is gradual. The Korey Stringer Institute describes heat acclimatization as a sequence that generally develops over roughly 7 to 14 days, with repeated, progressive exposure.[7] That matters because a 100°F Houston afternoon is not the moment to discover whether you can force adaptation through one hard apartment circuit.
If you have been training in heat consistently, you may tolerate warm conditions better than someone who has avoided them all summer. That still does not erase the indoor fan threshold, the room temperature, your medications or health conditions, sleep, hydration, or the fact that humidity can make sweat less effective. Acclimation changes tolerance; it does not turn a hot apartment into a cooled training room.
The call for today
Check the room. If it is below 90°F, use the fan, lower the unnecessary heat, and train with enough restraint to finish better than you started. If it is crowding 90°F or already hotter, strip the home session down to mobility or light work, or take the workout to air conditioning, a pool, or a cooler hour.
